Mayor’s cup: firefighters still champions, SSCS wins big

Sand Springs’ firefighters continued their dominance over the police department in the game of softball Friday night, taking their third straight Mayor’s Cup.
More importantly, the two teams helped to raise $850 in cash, along with a pickup truck bed full of food, for Sand Springs Community Services.

The two teams faced off in a best-of-three matchup. Firefighters swept the first two games, neither of which were exactly defensive masterpieces, taking the title. The final scores were 18-8 and 20-14.

Firefighters also slightly bested the police department in the amount of money raised.

Although the rivalry match is all in good fun, it’s for a serious cause. Sand Springs Community Services is a privately-funded non-profit aid agency. Its sole purpose is to provide financial and material assistance to economically disadvantaged Sandites, or people in a temporary crisis. The agency gives clothing, food, and even help with utility bills to those who need it.

Community Services Board Member Judy Treat said that the cash and food will go a long way to helping run the agency. Now though, she said, Community Services is running low on summer clothing, especially for children. Any donations would be appreciated, she said. Donations can be dropped off at 15 E. 2nd Street during its business hours.
